Welcome to Year 9 "Classics and Culture"

During this week of Classic and Culture lessons you will be continuing on the topic of "Indigenous Issues."

All the year 9 classes at at the same stage of lessons and this week you will be finishing the topic of Indigenous Issues, and using all the information you have learnt throughout this unit to assist in writing an Argumentative Essay.

TOPIC: Should we say Sorry?

 

The Stolen Generations, Deaths in Custody, and Civil Rights Movement all had a detrimental effects on Aboriginal people and their culture. The policies and practices in place, which allowed this to happen, have continuing effects on Australian society today.

 

You are expected to use previous knowledge learnt in this unit and your own knowledge to form an opinion whether we should say SORRY? or NOT?

 

Your Task for this assessment is to write an argumentative essay about one, or all or these Indigenous Issues stating your argument (for) or (against ) saying SORRY.

Approximately 750 words.

 

Lesson 1:

  • Group Discussion on what students know about issues that have affected Aborigines in Australian History since Colonisation.

 

  • Brainstorm as a class why or why not we should say sorry??

 

  • Research for supporting evidence and arguments

 

Lesson 2:

  • Learn how to write an argumentative essay.

 

  • Plan your essay in detail.

 

Lesson 3:

  •  Writing Argumentative Essay

 

Lesson 4:

  • Finishing off Final Draft of Essay. Essay Due at the end of this lesson.

 

 

 

Indigenous Issues Already Covered:

Stolen Generations:

- What it is?

- People's experiences/stories.

- Why it children were allowed to be taken away.

 

Deaths in Custody:

- Who killed Malcolm Smith?

- Circumstances of Aboriginals Deaths in Custody.

 

Civil Rights Movement:

- Rights that Aboriginal people were denied?

- Day of Mourning

- Changes in the 1967 Referendum.

- Self Determination. Tent Embassy

- Mabo Case.

 

Students should use all of this information that they have learnt in previous lessons as well as their own research to decide on what issue they want to reflect on for their essay. They should choose a topic that they are passionate about and can find information to support their argument whether we should say SORRY? Or NOT?
